from: Dhruvs Blog I made new Pics in the last months – please tell me what you think: As you can see, the key thing required for phase detection is the ability to capture light only from certain parts of the lens so that (at least) two distinct images can be formed and compared. This information makes it possible to calculate exactly where the lens needs to be moved to, without any of the trial-and-error of contrast detection AF. It also makes continuous AF easier, since the system can quickly calculate a new focusing distance (and even assess the subject's rate of movement), whereas the contrast detect system has to hunt again, during which time the subject is still moving, meaning the point of highest contrast will keep changing. Traditionally, phase detection in DSLRs has been conducted by a dedicated AF sensor. The main mirror on DSLRs is slightly translucent which allows some light through to a second mirror and down onto this sensor. This light is split by a series of prisms and lenses in front of the sensor so that different lines of pixels on the sensor receive light from different parts of the lens. As soon as you see this, you can understand why conventional compact cameras (and all the current mirrorless cameras) have to use contrast detection autofocus. Their sensor elements (sensels) are designed specifically to catch light from all directions and all areas of the lens at once. As such they have no way of separating the incoming light into distinct images. Even with the fastest, lightest lens elements, the trial-and-error nature of contrast detection tends to make it slower. How does Fujifilm's system work?Fujifilm's system provides a seemingly simple solution – masking-off half of a sensel means it only receives light from one side of the lens. By creating strips of these sensels, half 'looking' one way, half 'looking' the other, the camera gets the two distinct images necessary for phase detection AF. 'The structure is equivalent to the two light paths divided by two dedicated lenses in conventional phase detection AF device in DSLR's,' says Mr Yamashita.
Although he wouldn't be drawn on the exact arrangement he does give some detail: 'The AF sensels are only arranged in the center area of a CCD, so when phase Of course this means some sensels are receiving 50% less light than their neighbours. Yamashita suggests it need not be a big problem: 'we use several tens of thousands of pixels in the center area of a CCD, which is a very small number of pixels compared to the 12 megapixels used for imaging.' And, he says, they don't simply go to waste when taking pictures: 'sometimes they are used to compose image data and sometimes not, depending on the situation.' In low light where there isn't enough light to allow phase detection (since the focus sensels are only receiving half the available light) or when face detection is needed, requiring the camera to focus away from the center point, the camera switches back to contrast detection AF. As such the company is billing the system as 'Hybrid AF,' but that shouldn't disguise what is a potentially significant development for compact cameras. We'll be interested to see how the promise of this system works when we get a chance to subject it to testing. This was shot with my Canon 7D and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens this morning, actually. I was driving down the highway and noticed a large pond facing the direction of the sunrise, so did a u-turn and soon as I could, turned around again and jumped out of my truck and snapped this. Blast Off
My boyfriend and I had some friends visiting from out of town so we took them to the top of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, NV for their last night in town. My boyfriend thought this would be a great opportunity to take some pictures for this contest. I just ordered a DSLR camera so I wanted to get some practice before it was shipped to me. I grabbed his camera and took some practice shots but apparently I had better luck with my shots and was able to get a great one! Lady Liberty
Shot this with my T2I with the Canon EF 28-135 mm IS lens at 135 mm, f13, 1/500, iso 200. This picture was taken on the Staten Island ferry headed towards Staten Island at about 7:45 pm on Saturday 07/31. The ferry gives you one of the best and cheapest (its free) views of the Statue of Liberty. Minor color correction adjustments were made in Lightroom to try and even out the lighting. Sunset Preset
Nikon D5000 55-200mm VR lense F8 iso 200 1/3200s. This is right from my door at my apartment complex in okc. They have some awesome skies here! Tried a couple different setting but ended up going with the sunset setting. I did have to ps the power lines out… I can't get away from them. On the Water
Went out to eastern Long Island and looking for a good area to capture a full sunset. Just before we came upon Wildwood State Park up on the north shore. With minutes to spare I was able to get this one. Out of all the pictures I was able to get I liked this one the most. Shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T2i, EF0S 55-250mm f/ 4-5.6 IS lens focal length of 96mm. Shot using aperture mode at f16, shutter speed 1/500 sec at 100 ISO. Exposure bracketed at -2. Unintentional Flag Burning
Sunrise, 5:03 a.m. Lake Koshkonong, Edgerton, WI. I woke early to a Paradise
This photo was taken with a Rebel XTi with kit lens (18-55) on our 10th anniversary trip to St. Lucia last week. I shot this in Manual mode using the “Faithful” setting in the menu. I had to size up the larger photo to meet your minimum requirement as I took this photo before I knew there was a contest this week. I was on vacation after all and reading my usual tech stuff was restricted. Surfin' USA
Camera : Canon EOS 7D The Sailboat Shot
This is the photo taken at the Sisters bay WI, Point & Shoot Pefection
I love reading Gizmodo quite a bit and saw this contest for the sunset, and figured since I'm on vacation and had such beautiful shots as the one in the picture, I'd snap it and try submitting. Alas, being a dummy forgot my better camera at home, and it doesn't seem you take non digital camera entries, might be odd to submit a roll of film. No special lenses, filters or anything, just a crappy Sony Cybershot that belonged to a friend. Took the picture after some weather came through, was glad for the pictures. Information for the Sunset Contest: WINNER – Mt. Fuji Sunrise
Shooting Info: Sony A550, Sigma 10-20mm lens @ 15mm, ISO200, f/5.6, EV -1.7, 1/640 sec. Harder than ever to choose a winner—I must have changed my mind ten times! So many beautiful sunrises and sunsets are almost too much of a good thing. Maybe that's why nature only gives us each once a day. Find full size photos (aka wallpapers) over at Flickr. Hi guys, Will my Starhub, M1 or Singtel Mobile Broadband work with my ThinkPad X201? I purchased this laptop with this option – "Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable". What does this mean? I have a sim card tray slot by the battery compartment that will allow you to insert the SIM card provided by your network operator. But trouble is; the "Mobile Broadband" selection is still grayed out under the "Lenovo Access Connections". Any Help would be much appreciated. Cheers, canshota {Homepage über Breakless Bikes from: Maegans Site Laptops and Notebooks are becoming ever popular in a world that hasn’t stopped moving since the mid nineties. Almost everyone is in need of a notebook computer, but the problem is determining whether or not a particular brand is good for an individual or not. The brand that we are going to look at today is Toshiba so that we can figure out whether or not Toshiba Notebook Computers really are the best option for you. There has been a common theme among most users who have owned Toshiba notebook computers in the past, and that theme is heat. Yes, with any notebook computer there is going to be an issue with heat, but it seems to be more prevalent in Toshiba notebook computers. Usually a cooling pad would fix this, but there was an interesting issue with the Satellite L25 series that many users found to be quite true. Yes, the L25 was a low end notebook, but at a certain point both it’s network card and wireless network card would stop working. At boot it would claim there was an port conflict, but if you overheated the laptop enough, it would eventually report that everything was fine. We’re not going to speculate on what might have caused this, but anyone who knows about internal hardware is probably shaking their head right now. Lately Toshiba has improved, though they still have not fixed the heat issue. What they do have however the latest in processor technology. You can look forward to having dual core AMD’s in Toshiba notebook computers, but that doesn’t amount to much if their video technology isn’t up to par. They tend to use mobile variants of the different ATI cards, which is fine, but in the past these mobile cards have not functioned well. Is this a problem? No, not if you are not a heavy video gamer. If you are just someone who needs to surf the web and send e-mail, this will work perfectly. The problem is though that any people purchase Toshiba notebook computers in the hopes that they will be able to do photo editing or 3D modeling, and this is just not the case. When it comes down to it, with the heat problems and the substandard graphics cards, Toshiba notebook computers just do not stand up to the leading brands produced by Dell and HP. If you are however just looking to do some basic web surfing and maybe even play some old games, this will work very nicely. Just remember that the important thing here is to shop according to your needs. So long as you do this you will find that you’re happy with whatever you buy, especially if there is a full warranty. I made some shots in the last days – please tell me your thoughts: Do you like underwater photography? Do you want to know how it is done and what are the different things you should look out for when taking underwater pictures? Then you have come to the right place to learn what really underwater photography is. We all know that underwater photography can be a great fun and enjoyment activity and it can be more enjoyable experience for you if you really know all the nitty-gritty about underwater photography. If you want to take beautiful underwater pictures then most importantly you should have a powerful digital camera which can work underwater without any hassles. Because it is not like that you go underwater and immediately start taking pictures. Rather you have to take care of many things when taking pictures in the deep water. If you do not take enough care then your pictures can become blurred and quality can be compromised. You should always look out for the direction of the sunlight underwater as sunlight travels differently in the deep water which affects the picture quality. You have to adjust your camera angle properly with the direction of the sunlight when you are underwater. Then there is the impurity in the ocean water like mud and dirt which can really affect the picture quality underwater. This dirt can make the water so impure that you can not see properly in the deep water. But this happens most of the times only in the lakes and rivers. But many of the oceans are so clear and pure that you can see longer distance without any problems and your pictures most of the times comes as a quality product. Many people who try underwater photography; takes their own friend's and families pictures and this can be more entertaining and really memorable experience for the family members to cheer for long time. But one of the most important factor every underwater photographer should remember is that the underwater currents and their effects. It is the most unpredictable factor which really affects our picture quality when you are underwater. When you are underwater it is extremely difficult for everybody to stand still in the same pose. And with the dynamic nature of underwater currents it becomes more difficult to give the still pose for the photo. So you should always keep in mind the direction of the underwater currents while taking pictures. With the advancement of different types of digital cameras it will become easier in the future for us to take underwater pictures and really enjoy the experience of underwater photography.
